Apple pie is one of my family’s favorite desserts, and I love to make this in the fall/winter. My five year old daughter Allie will ask me, “Mama, can you make your apple pie for me?”, and how can I say no to that? There’s just something about warm cinnamon apples that just smell up the whole house, and they are the ultimate comfort food. Im using a pre made crust today, but you can always make your own for a even better pie. Hope you like it!
What you’ll need:
- 4 Granny Smith apples
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- 3/4 cup sugar
- 1 tbsp flour
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- pinch of salt
- 2 tbsp butter
- 3 pie crusts
- cinnamon sugar for sprinkling
Peel, core, and cut up your apples into thin slices.
Place apples in large bowl and toss with lemon juice. This prevents apples from browning.
In a separate bowl, combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
Add this mixture to the apples and stir.
Place apples in a strainer above a large bowl to strain out all of the juices. Let sit for 15 minutes.
Pour juice into a microwave safe container, and add butter.
Microwave this mixture for 3 minutes or until it thickens and forms a caramel. This is the good stuff.
Pour the mixture over the apples and stir.
Unroll one pie crust and place it in your pie pan. Fill with apples.
Lay out the second pie crust, and cut into 1/2 inch strips.
Lay these pieces vertically over your pie.
Cut up the remaining pie crust, and begin with your basket weave pattern. You want to lay the pieces down vertically by pulling back every other horizontal strip.
This will make your perfect basket weave pattern.
Trim the edges of the crust, and using a fork, create this trim all the way around.
Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar.
Bake at 375 degrees for approximately 30 minutes. If the edges start to get very brown, cover them with foil.
Ta-da! A perfect apple pie. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before cutting.
Serve with ice cream!
